UAE university installs region's biggest grid computer

United Arab Emirates (UAE) university has installed one of the most advanced, and the region's biggest, super grid computer, WAM news agency reported Friday.

The computer, developed in collaboration with Sun Microsystems, places the university on the list of 500 high performance computing grids worldwide.

'The university is looking forward to working with Sun to develop new grid-enabled applications, from energy to medicine, and contribute in a meaningful way to the global grid development initiatives,' said Abdullah Al-Khanbashi, vice chancellor of UAE University.

Applications ranging from computing to nanotechnology will be supported by Sun's super grid.

In addition, the university intends to connect the grid with other major international networks to share resources with scientists from around the world, the vice-chancellor said.

The grid computing infrastructure is being set up at the College of Information Technology (CIT) of the university.

The CIT investigates applications related to petroleum domains, such as seismic and oil-reservoir simulation, as well as to bioinformatics, multimedia, and e-learning.
